How to Have Fun When It Comes to Your Business

You started your business because you love and believe in what you do, right? But sometimes, when you’re wading through thousands of emails and mindless tasks, you can lose sight of that passion.  

In Peter Shankman’s appearance on The Growth Lab Show, he talks about the importance of having fun as a business owner.  

So, how can you get back to that place of joy and learn to have fun when it comes to your business? Today, we’ll share some tips. 

Remember What You Love About Your Business 

The first step to having fun with your business is remembering what you love, or at least like, about it in the first place. You dedicate a lot of time and energy to your business, so there’s obviously something driving you! Sit down and make a list of all of the things you enjoy about your business, or what makes you happy about your business. Maybe that’s your mission, a new product you’re excited about, the great energy of your team – whatever it is that gets you up in the morning. 

On the flip side, put together a list of the things that you’re not so excited about. That might be things like managing payroll, staying on top of daily social media posts, or trying to keep up with an overflowing inbox. We all have tasks we don’t love to do, but that shouldn’t be a focus of your day when there are so many aspects about your business you’re passionate about!  

Delegate Your Least Favorite Tasks 

Once you’ve identified what you enjoy doing, make more time for those tasks by delegating the less favorable ones. If you don’t have someone within the business who can handle those things, consider turning to outside help. 

Virtual assistants can take some of the more time-consuming administrative tasks off your plate, which allows you to focus on the things you’re most excited about. Not only that, it leaves you with more energy to dedicate to big-picture strategy. You can also look at ways to automate parts of your business that take up a lot of time, like lead management, billing, or scheduling.  

When you get a little help or give some tasks away that are weighing you down, you can start to enjoy the things that build you, and your business, up! 

Give Back to the Community 

You started your business to serve your local community, and one of the best ways to tap back into your happiness is to get out from behind your desk and give back to that community. 

Consider ways your business can get involved in local charities or organizations. Whether that’s donating an item or experience to the local food bank’s annual silent auction or organizing a team outing to volunteer at your city’s hospital, the benefits here are numerous. 

Not only will you feel great giving back and personally connecting with your community, but getting involved in important community causes is a great way to gain positive attention for your business. It’s a win-win! 

Bring Your Outside Interests to Work 

One of the greatest ways to bring fun into the office is to allow you and your team the space to bring their full selves to work. Think about creating some events for your team centered around shared interests: a day where they can dress up as their favorite superhero, an evening out at the local bowling alley, or a friendly office pool before the Super Bowl or Golden Globes. Not only is it fun to cut loose a bit in your workplace, but getting to know more about the people you’re working with creates a sense of camaraderie and makes for a more engaged team. 

Focus on Helping, Not Selling 

Of course, the goal of any business is to make money and sell the products or services you offer. But when you start to lose sight of the why behind what you do, your work can start to feel like soulless selling. 

To flip that script, think about how what you’re selling is designed to improve your customers’ lives. You started this business because you’re passionate about the industry and believe you’re offering the best solution. This is how you should be framing everything you do for the business. 

Your website content is designed to provide valuable information to consumers. Every new product launch is an opportunity to solve a problem in a completely unique way. Any cold call you make is a chance to introduce someone who needs help to your business’s great offerings. 

When you focus on really connecting with customers, listening to their needs, and offering meaningful solutions, your work becomes more about the joy of helping rather than the drudgery of selling

You started your business because you love and believe in what you do. If you’ve lost sight of that passion, never fear! There are plenty of ways to tap back into that happiness and have fun when it comes to your business. After all, we’re at work for the majority of our day, and if you’re running a business, that time becomes longer. So, you want to make sure at least part of your day is spent focused on things that bring you joy and make you happy.
