When it comes down to it, you spend the majority of your week working. So, if you’re not doing work that you at least enjoy a little bit, your week can feel like a real slog.

Laura Gassner Otting, Founder and Chief Catalyzing Officer at Limitless Possibility, talked about this on The Growth Lab Show. After working in The White House, she spent a majority of her career helping people find their dream jobs doing work that mattered to them. She discovered the importance of consonance – which is when what you do matches who you are. She’s found that for herself now and wants to help others discover the same for themselves. Laura details this in her book Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life.

Laura talked to us about the four c’s to discovering the work that best matches up with who you are. They are:

  • Calling
  • Connection
  • Contribution
  • Control

Your calling will likely not change over time, but the other three c’s might, so she talks about how to move forward as things evolve in your life.

Laura also talks a lot about failure and imposter syndrome. When she first worked in The White House, she felt like a huge imposter, she said, and was struggling to find her place.

“I was getting so good at faking it until I made it that I didn’t know what I was making!” she said.

That’s when she discovered she could just say “I don’t know,” and ask for help. That allowed her to gain so much knowledge, grow in her career, and learn from her failures.
