Andre Archimbaud, Senior Digital Marketing Consultant, sat down to talk with us about how his career took him from network news, to working with clients for their digital marketing, to co-hosting the upcoming Growth Lab Show podcast, launching Feb. 5, 2019.
Hi, Andre! Thanks so much for sitting down with us today. Let’s start off by talking a little bit about you and your background in marketing.
Andre: I am a career media person. I worked in network news production for the first 10 years of my career and transitioned into media sales in 2004. I initially worked at CBS Radio for WCBS-AM and CBS’s New York radio group. When I landed at CBS, they launched their Small Business Network (SBN). In so many ways, the content of The Growth Lab Show mirrors what CBS was trying to do with the SBN. After two years at CBS, I left to join a client as the VP of Marketing for a mortgage company, which lasted about a year.
I then worked for an independent media buying service in the New York area for a little over a year before joining Yahoo! as a senior sales specialist calling on Fortune 500 companies. After two years at Yahoo!, I joined ReachLocal (part of the USA TODAY NETWORK) in 2010.
Between my time at CBS & Yahoo!, I felt uniquely qualified to work at ReachLocal, and still largely feel that way!
Wow, you’ve had great the career trajectory! What do you love most about what you do now?
I love helping SMBs grow their businesses blended with our technology and know-how.
And I know The Growth Lab Show is all about helping business owners grow their business. How did you get involved with co-hosting the podcast?
I first met Tracy [Oswald, VP of The Growth Lab and The Growth Lab Show co-host] when she was a co-Regional Sales Manager in the New York City office for about two years. And her daughter also went to my alma mater, Emerson College, in Boston, so we had a connection.
When Tracy came to New York to talk to our office about LOCALiQ the Growth Lab a few months ago, I asked her if she needed help with getting guests or producing the show. She agreed she did need some help with the show and maybe some other aspects of The Growth Lab. Given that I am interested in making some career moves and doing different kinds of work combined with my broadcast background, it seemed a perfect fit. I’ve also hosted my own music podcast for the last seven years, so I have some podcasting experience.
Tracy also mentioned that you know so many people in the marketing and business world, including a lot of your guests. How did you meet them?
I’ve been an early adopter on most technology and social media platforms. I was in the beta for LinkedIn in about 2004 or 2005, for example. A friend of mine’s PR firm was repping them here in NYC. I was also a very early adopter of Twitter. I believe I am user 700,000 or so. This March will mark 12 years for me on that platform, and August 2019 will mark 12 years for me on Facebook. I wasn’t a college kid in 2004 so I couldn’t join then, but I am certain that I would’ve had I could’ve!
As a result of that early adoption and an ability to connect with folks online and off, I’ve built a strong network of friends who happen to be connecters, business leaders, and influencers.
I’ve also been involved in the NY Tech Startup community the last 12 to 14 years, so I got to know some of these folks through their engagement in this community and their respective communities.
That’s really cool! So, you have a lot of guests with some great insights from their experiences – what’s the most inspiring takeaway you’ve heard from one of your guests so far?
Probably from Bryan Kramer about the fact that no matter how large a brand is, the goal is to have a human connection. Today’s technology allows for businesses of all sizes to do that, with aplomb. It’s all about finding the right balance between technology and human connection, which he details in his appearance. I think people are really going to find it fascinating.
Podcasts are such a big thing now, and a lot of people are getting into hosting them. You’ve been in the game for the last seven years with your music podcast and now this one for the last few months. What would people be surprised to know about podcasting?
It’s a LOT of work to do a good job. Given the range of things I’ve done with my career, this is something that I’d even lost sight of since giving up my career in network broadcasting 15 years ago.
We’ve recorded a handful of episodes before the launch [on Feb. 5], so it can be challenging to ensure that the content is meaningful to our listeners. Especially when we haven’t had any yet!
But it’s exciting to think about the potential for us to grow this brand into a household name in the SMB and entrepreneurial communities, and working with small businesses across my career, I think I have a pretty good idea of what will resonate with them.
What podcasts inspire you?
I am a fan of Alec Baldwin’s “Here’s The Thing” for the last five or six years. His interviews with celebrities and politicians are “can’t miss” for me. I also ADORE Malcolm Gladwell’s “Revisionist History” show.
You’ve had a really interesting and varied career path. What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always keep your ear to the ground, and remember that no one owes you a thing.
What career advice would you have for someone just starting out?
In my role as the Alumni Chapter President in NYC for Emerson College, I talk to young alums all the time. My advice is largely the same: Focus on what you want to do, but be open. Things are moving quicker than ever in this 24/7 world, and the path you set out on may not be the path you end up. Be open…be flexible.
My flexibility has led to more and different and varied opportunities than I’d ever imagined.
